Season of Bounty: Farm to Fancy Along Coastal North Carolina

There is something magical about growing season along the coast of North Carolina. Roadside farm stands overflow with tomatoes still warm from the sun, baskets of sweet corn line quiet country roads, muscadines begin to appear, and local kitchens fill with the flavors of another abundant season. Here in coastal North Carolina, bounty is more than a season — it is a way of life deeply rooted in generations of farming, gathering, and sharing meals around the table.

At Inn on Turner, every breakfast served begins with one simple belief: the very best meals start close to home. Our “Farm to Fancy” philosophy is not simply about beautiful presentation. It is about honoring the hardworking farmers, growers, and producers who nourish our community while bringing the freshest seasonal ingredients possible to our guests each and every morning.

We are proud to support local agriculture throughout Pamlico County and Eastern North Carolina while continuing our collaboration with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, whose dedication to agritourism and local food systems helps shine a spotlight on small businesses and family farms across our state. Being highlighted through their website and social media has been an incredible honor for our petite coastal inn and a meaningful reflection of the importance of preserving North Carolina’s agricultural heritage.

Rooted in Coastal Carolina Agriculture

Pamlico County and the surrounding coastal communities hold a rich farming history that often surprises visitors. Beyond the water, sailing, and seafood lies a landscape shaped by generations of farmers cultivating produce, grains, rice, sweet potatoes, and seasonal crops that continue to define Eastern North Carolina.

One local producer especially becoming close to our hearts is Tidewater Grain Co., a Pamlico County rice producer helping revive Carolina rice culture right here along the coast. Their work beautifully bridges history and innovation, bringing locally grown rice back to North Carolina tables while honoring centuries of agricultural tradition.

We are equally grateful for partnerships with local farms and roadside stands including Garner Farms, Merrell Farms (a century farm known across NC), Paul’s Produce, and The Hen Den where we source fresh seasonal produce and organic eggs weekly for our guest breakfasts. These local relationships allow us to thoughtfully craft seasonal menus inspired directly by what is growing right here in our coastal community.

Discovering Local Farm Stands & Markets

One of our favorite recommendations for guests is to slow down and explore the farm stands and local markets tucked along the coastal backroads of North Carolina. Some of the best discoveries happen unexpectedly — a handwritten sign for peaches, fresh okra stacked beneath a canopy, jars of local honey, or baskets of just-picked cucumbers waiting roadside.

For travelers hoping to experience more of North Carolina’s agritourism scene, the Visit NC Farms platform and the Visit NC Farms App make exploring local farms, fisheries, markets, and agricultural experiences incredibly easy. The app helps connect travelers with U-pick farms, farm stands, seafood markets, local producers, and authentic agricultural experiences throughout the state.

Whether wandering through Pamlico County’s scenic countryside or discovering hidden gems along Highway 55, these experiences offer visitors a deeper connection to the people and places behind North Carolina agriculture.

Bringing Farm to Fancy to the Table

At Inn on Turner, local ingredients inspire nearly every breakfast we create. Seasonal fruit folded into Belgian waffles, farm fresh eggs prepared each morning, coastal herbs, local grains, house-made baked goods, and fresh produce sourced nearby all become part of the guest experience.

To us, hospitality and agriculture naturally belong together. Farmers nourish communities long before chefs ever step into kitchens. Supporting local agriculture means preserving rural landscapes, strengthening coastal economies, and helping family farms continue for generations to come.

Most importantly, it allows guests to experience something increasingly rare while traveling — meals with a genuine sense of place.

When guests gather around our breakfast table, they are tasting more than a thoughtfully prepared meal. They are experiencing the story of coastal North Carolina — its farms, traditions, family businesses, and enduring spirit of community.
